Abbey-Rose Kelly - Artist's Statement

My work is a form of subjective expression. I am currently exploring the connections between aesthetics and emotion. Environments are often used as a point of departure for my creative and emotional expression. The emotions expressed investigate a variety of features in my life: each piece of work is an emotional journey and also one of discovery.

As my work develops, from drawings and photography into painting, it intentionally becomes more abstract. Abstraction gives space to produce more expressive and intense mark making, I am enticed to this abstraction: the freedom and diversity of the mark making. I am fascinated by the idea that each mark can be emotionally driven, and sometimes contain emotion tangibly without intention.

Through experimentation I am able to push my technique: discover new marks, develop my use and knowledge of colour, and become more rational in compositional choices.
